Welcome to Bemidji, Minnesota.
Bemidji is a city located in Beltrami County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,917. It is the county seat of Beltrami County. Bemidji lies on the southwest shore of Lake Bemidji, the northernmost lake feeding the Mississippi River. The lake attracts water recreation for summer tourists. Bemidji is the home to Bemidji State University.
Bemidji is also the first city on the Mississippi River; in fact, the name "Bemidji" comes from an Ojibwe word, Bemijigamaag, meaning "lake with cross waters".
Bemidji is located in the Woods and Waters Region between Grand Rapids and Crookston on US 2 on the banks of the Mississippi River near Chippewa National Forest. State parks and sporting events, inside or outside activities are offered, including many trails to hike, bike, snowmobile or ski; rent a canoe, golf, bowl, fish or just sail away on beautiful Lake Bemidji.
The Mississippi River originates in Bemidji. The city has 11 parks with a total of 150 acres with facilities for many sports. There are casino and bingo establishments on Indian reservations north and south of town. There is a total of six million acres of lakes and forest lands in the area!
Beyond the extreme amount of recreation opportunities available in Bemidji, it's also a place of venerable culture and exciting color. American Indian and Scandinavian cultures mix to form an invigorating mesh of people and culture. Visitors can take in an authentic powwow at the Red Lake and Leech Lake reservations.
Education is an important part of Bemidji, and recognized as such. Bemidji State University's campus resides as Minnesota's only lakeside school. The programs there add a emboldening degree of theater, music and sports to Bemidji's attractions.
